THE Struts recently rocked the River Rooms in Stourbridge to prove the region is still a hotbed for new music.

The East Midlands four-piece are signed to Mercury Records, have supported Mcfly on an arena tour and are planning an album release in early 2012.

The band, whose glam style and over-the-top shows have already led to comparisons to legedary rockers Queen, took time out for a Base Sessions chat before their packed-out gig.

The Struts’ visit to Stourbridge was part of an initiative by Hagley music teacher Fred Mallinson to bring national artists to Stourbridge with a chance for musicians from the region to scoop prestigious support slots.

Fred Mallinson said: “This is not a dream, in the past year I have brought acts such as Eliza Doolittle, The Wanted and The Hoosiers and put on shows with young local support acts.

“This year my links with the industry are getting stronger due to the sell out shows, I am now being offered more artists that are just about to break and I need more young bands to get this fantastic experience and build their band CV.

“It costs nothing to get involved and never know who will be in the audience as managers and record company people often come to see the headline act in a small venue.”

Fred’s next event is at The River Rooms on Monday October 31 when pop rockers Halfway To New York will be the headline act.

Fred Mallinson said: “This is such a great opportunity for young bands. I want to build a live music scene in Stourbridge with signed bands and local supports. It is a very exciting time and if you like new bands please come along and see the stars of tomorrow in a local venue before they get too famous”
