Pedmore Technology College and Community School has recently completed a whole-school Literacy project focussed on the World War One to commemorate the anniversary last year. Each tutor group in all year groups researched the experiences of soldiers and families, reviewed literature including poetry and prose from the era in order their own work that depicted the time through poetry, letters, and art.
The school invited Ron Gould, Chairman for the Stourbridge British Legion and fellow members to see the display and talk to students about conflict and the role the British Legion play in supporting the Armed Forces families and servicemen today.
British Legion members also took part in an English lesson that reviewed a 1915 poem to examine metaphors and similes and were interviewed by students taking part in this year’s BBC School News Report.
Miss Hughes, Pedmore’s English teacher who co-ordinated the literacy project said, “We were overwhelmed by the effort and understanding that our students showed in the work they produced and are delighted to be sharing our achievement with members of the Stourbridge British Legion. The children have really enjoyed working with them today and we are exploring ways that we can continue to work with this important organisation in the future”.
