MAJOR regeneration plans to transform Dudley and Brierley Hill town centres have been given government approval.
The Black Country Study recommends Brierley Hill becomes a new strategic centre for the Black Country alongside Wolverhampton, West Bromwich and Walsall.
A government sponsored Examination In Public' consultation was held in January to discuss plans for economic growth, better housing and an improved environment.
Now these plans have received full government backing.
Dudley Council leader cllr David Caunt said: "We're delighted the report recognises the strategic importance of Brierley Hill as a key centre for growth whilst acknowledging Dudley will continue to be an important local retail centre.
"Equally, the acknowledgement of Dudley and its surrounding area as a major tourist destination is welcomed, drawing on its heritage, including Castle Hill and the Museum, and the global significance of sites such as Wrens Nest National Nature Reserve, one of the most important Earth heritage sites in the world."
An eight-week consultation period will take place with the final published document unveiled in the autumn.
Sarah Middleton, chief executive of the Black Country Consortium, said: "We see this report as a major breakthrough.
"Overwhelmingly positive, it is a tremendous vote of confidence in the Black Country and gives us a lever for our future aspirations."
