On Tuesday March 6 the meeting opened with chairman Irene Oliver, announcing that Viscount Cobham had agreed to become our honorary president. The members present met the news with unanimous approval.
The speaker this month was Mr R Harris who talked to us about The Vernons of Hanbury.
The family had originated in the town of Vernon in France and two of the De Vernon brothers had accompanied William in the conquest of England in 1066. For their services they were rewarded with land. The last Vernon to occupy the hall was Doris, the widow of George Vernon; she died in 1962 leaving the hall in a poor state of repair. The hall is now a National Trust property and has been carefully restored.
The April meeting of the Society is on Tuesday 3 at which Mr T Keegan will give a talk on Milestones and Their Preservation.
All are welcome at St Saviour's Church Hall 8pm. Visitors £1.50 including refreshments. The April ramble is on Sunday 15 starting form the village car park at 2pm.
