Brave Michelle first woman to win gong
AN Iraq war heroine from Stourbridge called at Buckingham Palace to become the first woman to collect a Military Cross.
Michelle Norris, from Amblecote, hit the headlines last August after saving her injured commander during a gun battle in the south of the country.
The 19-year-old's bravery was recognised by the Queen at a ceremony on Wednesday March 21 when she travelled to London with her family to collect her gong.
Michelle's mum Sue said: "We are extremely proud, the day was lovely and the Queen told Michelle she was proud to be giving her the award.
"It was a fantastic occasion, Michelle said it hasn't sunk in yet and can't believe we have been to the Palace."
The brave teenage army medic had little time to celebrate, she left the capital shortly after the presentation to return to her base in Aldershot.
Michelle is currently training as a class one medic in the Royal Army Medical Corps before a further tour of duty in the middle east.
Sue said: "We are really proud but just having her here is best, it doesn't matter how many awards she gets, the most important thing is that she comes back safe and sound."
Speaking after the award was announced, Michelle said: "It's just overwhelming, I never thought I would go down in history for something I did."
