AN award-winning Hagley teacher is now a star of the silver screen after featuring in a national television campaign to attract more people into the profession.

Jemma Sherwood, a maths teacher at Haybridge High School, is one of eight teachers from across the UK to feature in the new advert.

Your Future Their Future, which premiered on October 27, sees teachers explaining why those with the passion and potential to teach should consider a career in the profession.

Jemma, who has a first class degree in mathematics with Russian studies from the University of Birmingham, said she saw the campaign as a chance to put teaching “in a good light”.

“I just stand in my maths classroom and say a line along with about seven other teachers,” she said.

“I thought it was a really interesting opportunity to paint the profession in a really good light as I love teaching.”

The 33-year-old was chosen to star in the campaign after winning a silver Pearson Teaching Award for outstanding secondary school teacher.

Narrowly missing out on the top gold award, Jemma – who claimed she was humbled the nomination – was put forward by her fellow staff members.

She said: “It was such a surprise to find out. Personally I never thought I was any different than all the other brilliant teachers I work alongside.

“Our deputy headteacher said he nominated me because he thought I was one of the best teachers he had worked with the past 20 years.

“The judges came into the school to see me work, they interviewed my students and their parents and they also contacted a number of old pupils of mine.

“I found it so humbling that other staff, my pupils and my past pupils would think so much of me.”
