CELEBRITIES are well practised at posing in sunglasses but now they're getting into the fashion frame by designing them too.
Victoria Beckham has increased her style status with her own dVb line of shades and Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie are all set to become sunglass designer rivals in the coming months launching their own ranges.
But you don't have to be a celebrity to pull off the latest it' shades like the must-have Ray-Ban Wayfarer. There's plenty of sunglass styles to suit, whether you want retro chic or a daring injection of look-at-me colour.
"Sporting a good pair of sunglasses is a fabulous way to complete any outfit," says David Allen, MD of shadestation.co.uk.
"But ensure that they do the job that you bought them for - protecting your eyes from the sun - and make you look and feel good when the sun shines."
Invest in some serious eye candy this summer and you could have your winning statement piece for the season.
Whether you want to do A-list allure or rock n' roll glam, popping on a pair of sunglasses can dramatically lead your look, depending on the style you plump for.
"Retro styles and the bug-eye' look championed by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham are here to stay, but sunglasses have become more decorative with cut-out designs and diamante embellishments," says Suzanne Clarkson, Dollond & Aitchison's resident style expert.
"This summer, look out for shades that double up as a gorgeous piece of jewellery."
- OVERSIZED - go a shade larger with gargantuan glasses.
Try: Marc Jacobs' oversized wrap frame sunglasses £205 at House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer's oversized Autograph sunglasses, £25, or Warehouse's oversized sunglasses, £14.
- AVIATOR - The square metal style is a classic summer must-have.
Try: Next's gold-coloured aviator style sunglasses, £12.50, Debenhams' Red Herring aviators, £12, or for aviators with a twist look to Marks & Spencer's gold bar hoop pair, £29.50.
- RETRO - Go back to the future with cool retro shades.
Try: Escada's retro shades, £99, from designersunglasses.co.uk, Topshop's heart-shaped sunglasses, £16, or RetroSpec's Valentino retro shades, £127.
COLOUR CRAZEColour was big on the catwalks for spring/summer and shades are no exception.
"While black and brown shades will always be popular, fashion is also embracing bold and metallic colours so there's a style to suit everyone this season," Suzanne says.
If you're feeling bold, bright shades are a fabulous way to inject a splash of colour into your summer wardrobe. But be warned: matching super-bright shades to your outfit could result in serious overkill!
Go bright and beautiful with ASOS' red Victoria large retro sunglasses, £10, True Spirit's green or pink-rimmed aviators, £9.99 at Superdrug, or New Look's blue patterned shades, £8.
Colour doesn't have to mean rainbow brights. White is sizzling hot on the shades style radar prompted by the coveted white Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Style divas Sienna Miller, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Moss have all been snapped wearing the 80s throwbacks.
Get the white Ray-Ban Wayfarer shades, £85, at shadestation.co.uk or go white out on the trend with MKOne's white oversized sunglasses, £5, or Topshop's white bug sunglasses, £15.
FACE FACTSThere's no point picking out a hot pair of sunglasses if they manage to put your face in the shade. The shape of your face should be a big factor in deciding the style of shades you'll be sporting this summer.
Suzanne says: "If you have long hair, make sure you try on your sunglasses with your hair tied back to make sure they still give you the perfect profile."
She has this advice for finding the perfect pair of sunglasses to frame your face:
- OVAL FACES: Choose symmetric frames with central arms (ie arms beginning half-way down the rim of the lenses) to balance your face shape.
- RECTANGULAR FACES: Look best in deep, soft shapes or wider frames with central arms to shorten the face.
- ROUND FACES: Go for shallow, angular frames with high arms to add definition to your face.
- SQUARE FACES: Will benefit from soft angular frames with high arms in order to soften the overall look.
