Tailoring, oversized shirts and shorts are a hot look this summer. Why borrow from your man when you can buy your own?
Maxed out on feminine frocks and florals this summer? Lose your girly streak sharpish in this season's mannish fashions. From oversized shirts to trouser braces and brogues, whether you want to go the whole hog in mannish get-up or simply put a boyish spin on your style, you can pull off the look with a few key pieces.
- Get shirty
Slinging on an oversize shirt requires zero effort but achieves maximum impact, making it a must-have summer staple.
"Take one-piece dressing to its easiest conclusion with the shirt dress," says David Hayes, features editor of Happy magazine.
Go slouchy and pull in at the waist with a patent belt for instant femme appeal. Try French Connection's shirt dress, £50, Farhi's grey stripe short sleeve shirt, £80 at House of Fraser, or ASOS' oversized shirt dress, £22.
If you prefer shirts without super-plain qualities, look for subtle details such as J Jeans by Jasper Conran's pintuck shirt, £25 at Debenhams, or Cherokee's white ruffle shirt, £15.
- Manly leg-acy
Go boyish and baggy in Linea's cream wide leg silk/linen mix trousers, £75 at House of Fraser, Great Plains' linen trousers, £45, or Ringspun's wide leg trousers, £55 at Discoo.
Those seeking a sharper suited-and-booted look should head straight for the skinny straight-leg slacks, perfect for work or play when paired with heels. Look to Untold's straight leg trousers, £90 at House of Fraser, or Topshop's high waist skinny trouser, £30.
For a relaxed take on the trend, seek out boyish shorts or slouchy denim. Go for F&F's black belted shorts, £15 and J Jeans by Jasper Conran's pinstripe turn ups, £40 at Debenhams.
- Boyish blazers
Blazers are having a resurgence on the style radar and there's a shape to suit all, from oversized mannish shapes to cute, cropped tuxedo numbers.
"A long masculine-cut jacket is a great thing to wear over one of summer's fitted, body-conscious dresses," explains Claudia Croft, Style magazine's fashion features director."
Try Marks & Spencer's Limited pinstripe blazer, £69, River Island's PVC trim black blazer, £59.99, or Untold's Boyfriend jacket, £140, at House of Fraser.
Don't fancy a blazer? Slip on a waistcoat over a slinky tee for a boyish take on the trend. Try ASOS' halter waistcoat, £25, or Topshop's drop front waistcoat, £35.
- Masculine edge
When the girly vibe is just too strong in you, avoid going man overboard with a couple of choice accessories. Believe it or not, boy brogues are hot this summer.
From patterned to patent, flat brogues were paraded down the catwalks with a boy-ish stomp. Achieve the look with River Island's winkle picker brogues, £39.99, or Faith's silver leather brogues, £40.
For a feminine take on the brogue, step up your game with a heel like Jane Shilton's Mister lace-up heeled brogues, £79.99.
Hats are an easy way to give the nod to the mannish look. Try Topshop's black straw trilby, £20, or Beyond Retro's bowler hat, £25. Accessories like chunky watches, ties and braces are extra ensemble additions to achieve the look.
