BROMSGROVE MP Sajid Javid has confirmed he will be standing in June's General Election.
Mr Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has served the Bromsgrove constituency, which includes Clent, Belbroughton and Hagley, for the last seven years and he hopes to 'continue delivering for local people' into the future.
He said this morning he was “honoured to have been re-adopted as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Bromsgrove” and he added: “I am looking forward to campaigning for the strong, stable leadership this country needs under Theresa May.
“I am proud to have served my constituents over the past seven years and I hope to continue delivering for local people in the years ahead.
“It is important that we have this election now to ensure we have certainty and stability from a Conservative government for the next five years; the right government to negotiate Britain’s hand in Europe.
"Under this Government, employment is at a record high. In Bromsgrove, unemployment has fallen by a staggering 55 per cent since 2010, with businesses opening at a record rate. The local unemployment rate has fallen to just one per cent.
"But there is more to be done. With the right leadership, we can continue to strengthen both Bromsgrove and our country.
"The choice is clear: securing the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives or suffering under a weak, chaotic coalition led by Jeremy Corbyn.
"I am standing to secure a strong Conservative government for Britain and to ensure we continue to build a better and brighter Bromsgrove."
Mr Javid will be taking on Liberal Democrat Neil Lewis, who said he is 'ready for battle' this June.
Bromsgrove's Labour Group is yet to announce its parliamentary candidate, but chairman Michael Thompson said the group would welcome the chance to offer the people of Bromsgrove an alternative to Mr Javid.
Cllr Thompson said: "We will offer a Labour candidate who will work tirelessly to represent the interests of the people of this town in Parliament."
Bromsgrove UKIP is also in the process of selecting a candidate and spokesman Adrian Smart said members were already 'preparing to fight'.
