CLAP For Carers returns tonight, as people across the country take time to give thanks to the NHS, carers and key workers who are keeping the nation going during the coronavirus crisis.

The now weekly event takes place at 8pm and people are once again encouraged to show their appreciation for those working on the frontline.

In emotional scenes in last Thursday’s event, West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service formed a guard of honour outside Russells Hall Hospital as they applauded staff inside the hospital.

Wordsley's Red House Glass Cone was also illuminated in blue and green light, creating a stunning spectacle.

It is hoped tonight's event will once again see people unite to show their gratitude to frontline carers and key workers during the pandemic.

As this week’s event approaches, people have been warned to show their appreciation safely and not to release fire lanterns or set off fireworks during the applause.

Bosses at Dudley Council say they have been contacted by concerned NHS and care workers who are worried about the fireworks distressing their pets left home alone while they are out on the frontline fighting the coronavirus.

The loud bangs lighting up the night sky could also frighten the elderly living alone, council chiefs fear.

The plea comes after council chiefs and West Midlands Fire Service yesterday urged people not to set off potentially dangerous sky lanterns to pay tribute.
