THOUSANDS of people lined the streets to cheer on some of the world’s best road cyclists as they raced through Dudley today (Thursday August 4) for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
Cyclists whizzed past crowds in Sedgley, Upper Gornal and Dudley town centre in the time trial race which took in a large chunk of the borough.
The women were first off, leaving West Park in Wolverhampton at 10am.
England’s Anna Henderson took the silver medal, but was pipped by Australia’s Grace Brown to gold. Georgia Williams (New Zealand) won bronze.
The men’s event started around midday, with Rohan Dennis making it a double gold for Australia.
There was another silver for England too, with Fred Wright in second place. Geraint Thomas of Wales picked up bronze.
The time trials were also screened live on BBC One, with people able to watch the action on the big screen at sites in Sedgley and Dudley as well as taking part in fun family activities.
Councillor Sue Greenaway, Dudley's Mayor, was in Dudley town centre as the cyclists raced through and she said: "It was absolutely amazing to see how many people turned out. People of all ages, young, old, families, all together, enjoying the sunshine, cheering, and taking in the once in a lifetime opportunity to see world class athletes doing what they do best in our borough."
