A delighted Dudley Sports ended the season on a high after claiming the West Midlands Premier Division League Cup.

Sports lifted the trophy after defeating Wednesfield Town 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the Beeches.

Sports went in at the break 1-0 up after Ross Harris headed home a Andy Blakeley free-kick.

The second-half saw Sports create a number of chances but they had to wait until the 65th minute to increase there lead, when Harris headed home his second.

Wednesfield halved the arrears with eight minutes to go but Sports held their nerve to claim victory.

Manager Neil Perks was over the moon with the performance.

He said: "It was great win for the club and we celebrated well into the night.

"It was a superb day for us and to win the trophy after playing so well was brilliant because I think a 2-1 score-line flattered Wednesfield.

"This was the icing on the cake for what has been a fantastic season for us.

"My challenge is now to keep this group of young lads together but that will not be easy because players are always keen to progress."

The cup victory also brought the curtain down on 40-year-old centre half Chris Howard's career.

The veteran defender has been a stalwart on the West Midlands football landscape for more than two decades, but this was his first ever winners medal.

Perks made the veteran defender skipper for the afternoon and was delighted he can hang his boots up on such a high.

He said: "Chris has been one of the best centre halves around and it was just perfect for him to finish his career with his first ever winners medal.

"It's nothing short of what he deserves and I said to the younger players that these occasions don't come around very often so to cherish the moment."
