AN Amblecote pub landlord is set to fight back in a row with planners over his bid to beat burglars.

Wayne Etheridge, from the Royal Oak, says razor wire on a roof is essential for security after a series of raids at the High Street boozer.

On May 13, building inspectors ruled in favour of a Dudley Council enforcement notice against Mr Etheridge, who installed the wire without planning permission in July 2007.

After an appeal by Mr Etheridge against the notice, the Planning Inspectorate supported the council's view that the razor wire is "inappropriate in this location and materially detracts from the character and appearance of the surrounding area".

Mr Etheridge said: "I can't understand where they are coming from, I am trying to protect what is legally mine and I intend to take this further.

"I had three break-ins in 11 months, my insurance company stopped insuring me for break-ins.

"I was being targeted by crooks but there have been no further break-ins since I put the wire in."

The pub gaffer says major roadworks in the area have already caused a 60 per cent drop in trade and losses from more robberies could put The Royal Oak out of business.

Dudley planners argue the appearance of buildings is important and bosses should seek advice before making changes.

Helen Brookes-Martin, planning regulations manager at Dudley Council, said: "Whilst the council fully understands and appreciates the need for businesses to implement adequate security to protect their premises, it is important that appropriate security measures are considered.

"These measures not only need to provide the necessary protection, they must also not detract from the visual appearance of the property or the wider area."
