Stourbridge Chess club have just concluded a very successful season after picking up a host of honours.
Having already won the Homer Trophy and gained promotion from Birmingham League Division Three to Division Three, three more trophies have been added to their collection.
Rushall were their opponents in the Humphreys Cup final, which is a cup for teams of players in the Wolverhampton league graded under 110.
The final was played at Bushbury and Stourbrisdge went into it witheir strongest possible side.
John Webster agreed a quick draw on board four. Jeremy Humphries managed a comfortable win on board three. Richard Wilkinson was offered a draw on board two, in what was a completely drawn position, but seeing that John Loynes was heading for defeat on board one, Richard knew the draw would give Rushall the match on board count, so he had to play on. John Loynes did lose, so all eyes turned to Richard.
Richard's opponent made some inaccurate moves and gave the advantage to Richard who went on to win the cup for his club.
On the same night in the Dudley League Division One Stourbridge drew with Halesowen securing second second place in the league.
In Dudley League Division Two after wins over Bushbury, Halesowen and Boldmere they claimed the title.
The club's AGM will be held on Monday June 2 at 7:30pm at the Stourbridge Institute, meanwhile their summer tournament starts on June 11 with a game every two weeks. This is open to all members and prospective members.
