THE efforts of young carers across the borough were celebrated at an event in Wordsley to mark Young Carers Action Day.

Dudley Young Carers hosted an event at The Source youth centre in Barnett Lane on March 15 to celebrate young carers aged five to 25 and the job they do looking after a loved one.

The event was also an opportunity for families to have fun together and to showcase how the Dudley Young Carers team can support people.

More than 100 people attended the event, made possible thanks to a donation from Carers Trust, which included inflatables, face-painting, a tombola, a drama session from Open Stage Drama Group, karaoke, barbecue and a host of other activities.

Wordsley councillor Kerry Lewis said it was a “fantastic evening celebrating young carers in Dudley” and she added: “Dudley Young Carers and their volunteers are a dedicated team who play a vital role supporting young carers across Dudley borough.”

Jennifer Douglas, Dudley carers lead, said: “Young Carers Action Day is a great opportunity to put the spotlight on young carers, the challenges they face and the support they need. Unfortunately, too many young carers and young adult carers are still struggling to access the right support. Caring can have a real impact on children’s health and wellbeing and this event was a chance for organisations to remind young carers that we are here for them.”

The Dudley Young Carers team is part of the Dudley Carers Wellbeing Service at Crossroads Caring for Carers, which provides a wellbeing service for carers in the borough, on behalf of Dudley Council.

The teams provide free, confidential one-to-one support with a dedicated worker, education and general wellbeing support, youth clubs and activities in the school holidays to help young carers access the support they need, take a break from caring and live their own lives healthily.
