MORE than 200 people have signed an online petition calling for a 20mph zone to be trialled in Stourbridge’s Old Quarter.

Andrew Tromans, Labour candidate for Wollaston and Stourbridge Town in May's local elections, started the petition with Heath Street resident Roseanne Adams.

It calls for a 20-mph zone and other traffic calming measures to be trialled in the area’s narrow, car clogged streets.

Andrew said: "The campaign for a 20mph zone and traffic calming measures in the Old Quarter is not new.

“A number of efforts have been made to deal with the issue over the years by both Labour and Conservative representatives. But I'm hoping that residents’ concerns will be taken seriously by Dudley Council if we can demonstrate enough support.

"This is a community campaign not a party political one. So, in that spirit, I'm calling on the sitting councillors in Wollaston and Stourbridge Town and our MP to get behind the efforts to improve road safety in the Old Quarter."

Eco campaigner Rosanne Adams added: "Many parents and residents are alarmed at the speed of some cars down the narrow streets of the Old Quarter which is both very unpleasant and extremely dangerous to children and pets. The actions of young children are not always predictable."

Rosanne has been collecting signatures for a paper petition near Greenfield Gardens during school pick-up time and has so far collected a further 65 signatures in addition to the online petition on Change.org.

Wollaston and Stourbridge Town Labour councillor Cat Eccles said she has been calling for increased traffic calming measures in the Old Quarter for some time.

She added: “The area is a well-used rat run for drivers trying to avoid the ring road and residents have had enough. Nearly every person I speak to in the Old Quarter raises concerns about speeding and it's time for Dudley Council to do something about it.”

The petition calls for a 20mph speed limit in the following streets:

Albert Street, Bright Street, Brook Street, Borough Crescent, Bowling Green Road, Baylie Street, Beale Street, Cathcart Road, Cecil Street, Charles Road, Cobden Street, Clark Street, Cleveland Street, Clifton Street, Cross Street, Duncombe Street, Green Street, Greenfield Avenue, Heath Street,Hill Street, Lawn Avenue, Lawn Street, Lion Street, Mamble Road, Pargeter Street, Swan Street, South Avenue, Western Road, West Street, Wheeler Street, and Unwin Crescent.
