THE bravery of those who fought and died for their country is being honoured across Stourbridge with commemorative statues on display in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.
Councillor James Clinton arranged for the black silhouette statues of soldiers to be installed at key sites as part of this year’s Remembrance commemorations.
He has previously organised poppy displays in his Pedmore and Stourbridge East ward, but this year wanted to go a step further.
Thanks to a kind donation from Sentinel Plastics Ltd, around 40 black aluminium composite statues representing British Army 'Tommies' have been created and sited around various township areas of Stourbridge.
One has been installed on a flagpole in Wollescote Park; a display can be seen overlooking Stourbridge ring road, near the pedestrian crossing from Hagley Road; others have been sited at locations in Pedmore including the Hagley Road traffic island.
Cllr Clinton (Conservative) said: “Steve Hill made this happen. I can’t thank him or Sentinel Plastics LTD enough.”
He said the displays have been proving a hit with residents and added: "The one at the top of the town is very close to where the cenotaph used to be by the old library."
Next year, Cllr Clinton hopes to invite people to sponsor the statues and display stories of family members involved in wars past - with funds raised going to the Royal British Legion.
