FLATS in Stourbridge High Street had to be evacuated last night when a fire broke out in a fast food takeaway.

Fire crews were called just before 9pm last night (Thursday June 13) after a fire started accidentally at an Italian pizza takeaway towards the top of the High Street.

Flats above the eatery had to be evacuated as a precaution due to the incident but luckily no one was injured.

West Midlands Fire Service sent two fire engines and a 4x4 brigade response vehicle from Stourbridge and Brierley Hill – with the first arriving within two minutes of the emergency call.

A spokesperson for the fire service said of the incident: “This was a fire in a ground-floor fast food restaurant which was part of a three-storey building.

“The fire, which started accidentally, affected the wooden casing around an electrical intake. The casing was safely removed and put out by crews using a fire extinguisher.

“Two floors of flats were evacuated by firefighters as a precaution. “Everyone was accounted for and there were no injuries.

“This incident was left with Western Power, who isolated electrics. Crews left the scene shortly before 10.30pm.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service was also alerted to the incident and a spokesperson said: “An ambulance and paramedic officer were sent to the scene. Following a thorough search, there were no injured patients requiring assessment and we were stood down.”
