TALENTED local photographers have been proudly sharing their images of the Aurora Borealis as the Northern Lights put in anther appearance in the skies over the Midlands.

Dave McGirr managed to capture the lights from the hilltop St Peter’s Church in Kinver, South Staffordshire; while Dudley photographer Rik Freeman drove out towards Bridgnorth to try to find a dark spot from which to photograph the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.

Posting his images to the Kinver Pictures and Postcards site on Facebook after capturing them at around 1am this morning (Tuesday August 13), Mr McGirr said: “Went up to St Peter’s to photograph the aurora…with the village in the foreground. Saw a few spectacular meteors but wasn’t quick enough to get a shot. Next time.”

Mr McGirr said he could see the pink glow with the naked eye but not as clearly as through the camera lens and the scene was not quite as vivid as when the lights were seen earlier this year on May 10.

Meanwhile, Dudley photographer Rik Freeman drove out into the Shropshire countryside to try to get some shots of the aurora.

He said: “I had to drive out of Dudley for around half an hour to a dark spot close to Bridgnorth, with the aim of capturing the aurora and hopefully some Perseid meteors.”

Realising the light pollution in Dudley would scupper any chance of seeing the lights - he managed to spot a field in Alveley which proved the perfect place to try to capture “one of nature’s amazing spectacles”.

He said: “I was able to capture the aurora fine but did not see one meteor enter the frame on any shot, even though I had them whizzing past in all other directions.

“Luckily when I got home to review the images on the PC, lo and behold I did actually capture a couple, so an added bonus for me.”
