VISITORS can watch a blacksmith make a chain, have a go at spinning wool, trace their Cradley ancestors and climb the tower at a historic church's open day.

There will be lots to do at St Peter's Church's Heritage Open Day this Saturday (September 7) from 10am till 2pm.

A local blacksmith will be making chain and forging iron in the churchyard and there will be an opportunity for visitors to spin wool and climb the tower and chime a bell.

Church spokesman James Brookes said: "There’s lots going on with displays of old photos and documents, vestments.

"Visitors can browse through a selection of local history books for sale, enjoy our refreshments and finish the day with a free concert!"

People will be able to trace their Cradley family tree with family history experts and grave searches from 10am - 2pm.

Between 2.30pm and 3.30pm Jessica and James Bradley can be seen in concert with organ, piano and recorder duets and a big screen projection.

Visitors can see inside the church which was originally built in 1789 as a Non-Conformist Chapel, before the minister converted to the Church of England in 1798.

The sanctuary, which was added in 1933, features three stained glass windows by local stained-glass artist William Pardoe of the Stourbridge Stained Glassworks of nearby Lye.

There will be lots of old photographs to view and displays about the heritage clock project and the recent new weathervane and tower floodlights.

Free parking is available courtesy of Cradley Baptist Church in Blue Ball Lane and also at local car parks and on street parking.

The churchyard will be closed to vehicles for safety due to craft demonstrations in the churchyard.

Entry is free.
