A MAN and a woman suffered serious injuries after a car collided with a lorry and crashed into a wall in Quarry Bank in the early hours of this morning (Monday September 9).

The incident, which has left the High Street closed in both directions, happened at the junction of High Street and Sheffield Street just before 12.30am.

Two people were reportedly hurt – a man, aged 46, and a woman, aged 52.

Police have launched an investigation and a woman has been arrested.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said of the incident: “We were called to reports of a car that had collided with a lorry and crashed into a building on High Street, Brierley Hill, at 12.21am.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor, with a critical care paramedic, attended the scene. On arrival we discovered two patients, a man and a woman.

“They were both treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to Russell’s Hall Hospital.”

West Midlands Police also attended and a spokesperson for the force said: “We were called to Sheffield Street at the junction of High Street at around 12.18am this morning (September 9) after a car hit another vehicle and a wall.

“A 46-year-old man was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

“A 52-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and remains in police custody.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to get in touch via Live Chat on our website quoting log 48 of September 9.”

West Midlands Fire Service said it sent two fire engines to the scene – one from Haden Cross and the other from Stourbridge – after being alerted at 00.22am.

The fire service said the incident involved a car which had collided with a stationary, unoccupied HGV and that the car had come to rest touching a commercial shop.

A spokesperson for the service said: “The two occupants of the car, a male with head injuries, and a female with suspected wrist injuries, received first aid from firefighters at the scene. They were subsequently treated by West Midlands Ambulance paramedics and conveyed to hospital.

“We believe the car did strike an external gas pipe at the commercial shop; however, regular readings were taken, and no gas leak was detected externally. Representatives from Cadent attended the scene to conduct investigations and ensure gas safety. No other damage to the building was reported.

“Our crews left the scene at 02.59am and the incident was left with West Midlands Police to conduct accident investigations.”

The High Street (A4100) was closed in both directions for much of the day, with bus services 14A, 24 and X10 diverted, while crash investigators worked at the scene between Park Road and Sheffield Street, according to traffic reports published by INRIX.
