A STOURBRIDGE shopkeeper has told of his shock at seeing his shopfront demolished after a crash involving three cars.

The incident, which saw the frontages of Norgroves Newsagents and DY9 Design smashed in, happened on Saturday October 5 at around 12.45pm in Drew Road, Pedmore.

Miraculously, no-one was seriously injured but both the newsagents and hair salon had to close after the incident which was attended by police, fire crews and the ambulance service.

It’s understood that a Land Rover Discovery careered into the shops and two other vehicles parked outside.

Shiv Gill, who runs Fletchers Drinks and neighbouring Norgroves Newsagents, said: “Luckily there was no one seriously injured.”

West Midlands Fire Service said it sent a fire engine from Stourbridge Fire Station and a 4x4 brigade response vehicle from Haden Cross, with the first appliance arriving on the scene within four minutes of being mobilised.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “This was a collision involving three cars, resulting in one vehicle coming to rest in the glass frontage of two high street shops.

“There was no structural damage to the impacted building. Crews made three vehicles safe and removed glass and loose debris from the shop frontage.

“A thorough inspection of the shop and flat above was carried out.

“Police colleagues arranged recovery of the vehicle and firefighters left the scene at 3.02pm.”

Mr Gill, who was alerted to the disaster by relatives, described the incident as “scary” and added as he surveyed the damage: “I didn’t realise it was quite as bad as this.

“We had to close the shop, we’ve only had it three months – and we don’t know how long we’re going to be closed for.”

He said it was heartening to see the community pulling together after the incident, with customers helping to sweep away the debris.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance to the scene at 2.10pm and a woman who had been inside one of the shops was assessed but a spokesperson added: “The patient was uninjured and discharged on scene.”

The fire service added that the “driver of the moving vehicle is believed to have been conveyed to Russells Hall Hospital as a precaution”.

A post on DY9 Design's Facebook page said of the incident: "We are all a bit shook up but counting our blessings massively. We are open as normal from tomorrow."
