THE former Stourbridge Royal British Legion building is on the market with a £225,000 price tag.

The former legion HQ in Enville Street is being marketed by Johnson Fellows after a failed campaign to save the venue as a meeting place for ex-servicemen and women.

It has been six months since it was revealed that the clubhouse was in danger of being lost due to financial difficulties.

Ex-service personnel have had to find alternative places to catch up and the club’s closure has not impacted upon the continuation of the Stourbridge Royal British Legion fundraising branch that runs the annual Poppy Appeal.

The 4,030 sq ft two-storey building, on the corner of Forge Road, dates back to the early 1900s and was used as a pub before it became the legion’s clubhouse.

Sales particulars say: “To the side and rear is a series of single storey extensions mainly flat roofed although the function room has a pitched felt covered roof.

“At ground floor is a series of bars/members rooms and at first floor there are further additional offices/members rooms.”

A spokesperson for the Royal British Legion said: "The Stourbridge club as a business entered insolvency and surrendered the lease. Under the remit of the Charity Act the property, owned by the Royal British Legion, will now be sold.

"The Royal British Legion have now placed the site on to the market following the Charities Act legislation and processes.”

Meanwhile, legion members are getting set for this year’s Remembrance Sunday parade which will take place in Mary Stevens Park on Sunday November 10, starting at 10.45am.

A pre-parade planning meeting will be held at The Army Reserve Centre, Swinford Road, Oldswinford, at 7pm on Wednesday October 23.

Mick Thompson, chairman of Stourbridge Royal British Legion, said: “Despite the sad, but inevitable, closure of the RBL club on Enville Street earlier this year, Stourbridge Royal British Legion Branch is still thriving and active amongst the community.

“The organisation of the annual Remembrance parade is in full swing and we’re all praying for better weather this year.”

Anyone wishing to attend the planning meeting is asked to email Mick Thompson at stourrblchair@gmail.com or branch secretary Mick Sage at Stourbridge.secretary@RBL.community.
