SATURDAY July 12 marked 100 days since the general election where I was elected as your Labour MP and we gained a Labour government! It has been a busy few weeks, but the Government has hit the ground running and already passed a range of legislation promised in the manifesto.
I have now fully appointed my team and have both of my offices in Stourbridge and Westminster up and running. We have helped over 1,000 residents from all over the Stourbridge constituency, from Netherton to Norton, from Brierley Hill to Pedmore. I have held 17 face-to-face surgeries, alongside four street surgeries and three police surgeries and walkabouts. I have made a conscious effort to avoid being sucked into what is called ‘the Westminster Bubble’, and to keep in touch with constituents, local businesses, community groups and charities back home in Stourbridge.
I recently asked a question in the House of Commons chamber about support for Ukraine’s community led military efforts. This was the third time I have spoken in the chamber; however, I am yet to make my maiden speech. I was due to make my maiden speech during the debate on Lord Darzi’s Independent Report into the NHS, but due to urgent business added to the agenda, I was not able to deliver it. I spent countless hours in the chamber waiting for the debate to start, and when it did finally start there was not enough time for everyone to speak. This is a perfect example of how the pace of parliamentary procedure can sometimes result in delays to MPs achieving their aims, but I will certainly be making my maiden speech very soon.
Since July 4, Parliament has only sat for a limited number of days because of the Summer Recess, which was then followed by the Conference Recess. Despite the limited number of parliamentary business days we have been busy. Nationalising the railways, ending the hereditary privilege of members of the House of Lords, starting an investigation into the billions lost due to corrupt Covid contracts, bringing the hammer down on reckless water companies, scrapping the cruel and illegal Rwanda scheme and introducing the Border Security Force to take back control of irregular migration, introducing GB energy, starting plans for the rollout of free school breakfasts for primary school children, strengthening renters rights, bringing in the greatest change to employers workers rights in 20 years, ending public sector strikes through reasoned negotiation rather than performative gaslighting and swiftly tackling the riots this summer.
Even now we are making further headway. The international stage has seen a more confident and capable Britain. The prime minister held an International Investment Summit and secured the UK £63 Billion, which will lead to the creation of over 38,000 jobs across the UK. President Zelensky was recently hosted at 10 Downing Street, we are repairing our relations with Europe and renewing our strategic partnership with the United States.
There are many more sitting days of Parliament before the next recess, and this momentum will not be lost. As ever, please do contact me if you need help and advice or want to discuss policy, I’d love to hear from you.
