A MAN has been confirmed dead after emergency services were called to reports of an incident at Stourbridge Canal.

Police and paramedics flooded the scene in Wordsley just after 8am today (Friday October 18).

Ambulance crews found a man in a critical conditions on arrival and, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of an incident on Stourbridge Canal, Wordsley, at 8.11am.

“We sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers, our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the WMAS Critical Care Car to the scene where, upon arrival, crews found a male, in a critical condition.

“Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support however, sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him, and he was confirmed deceased on scene.”

West Midlands Fire Service has told how crews responded to the incident and said thoughts go out to all those affected by it.

A spokesperson said firefighters were called to Wordsley High Street at 8.10am - adding: "A fire engine from Stourbridge responded, arriving within five minutes of being mobilised.

"Police colleagues had found a man in the canal. Paramedics and firefighters administered CPR, but despite their best efforts, the man was declared dead by WMAS staff at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with anyone affected by this incident.

"We left the scene at 8.57am, with ambulance colleagues still in attendance."

West Midlands Police said officers were called after a man's body was found in the canal off Bridge Street just after 8am.

A spokesperson for the force added: "His death is not being treated as suspicious and we have informed the coroner."
