COMMEMORATIVE statues honouring those who fought and died for their country have been springing up in Stourbridge as Remembrance Day approaches.

Pedmore councillor James Clinton has put up black silhouette statues of soldiers and red poppies outside Mary Stevens Park, Norton, as part of this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

The black aluminium composite statues representing British Army 'Tommies' were created last year thanks to a kind donation from Steve Hill of Sentinel Plastics Ltd in Cradley Heath.

Cllr Clinton (Conservative) said the statues have been proving a hit with people across the town.

He said: “Everyone loves them.”

As well as creating a poignant tribute to those killed in combat, the statues are also helping to educate the next generation - Cllr Clinton said.

He said he also plans to put up statues in Lye outside Christ Church and on the roundabout by the Foley Arms, Pedmore, ahead of Remembrance Sunday which will see commemorative events held across the borough – including a parade in Mary Stevens Park, starting around 10.45am.

Cllr Clinton said he'd like to put even more statues on display next year and he urged any big-hearted companies or individuals who might wish to help with funding such a project to get in touch by emailing him at Cllr.James.Clinton@dudley.gov.uk.
