Stourbridge Cricket Club’s hopes of promotion were washed out on Saturday after final game of the season away at Bromyard was postponed without a ball being bowled.
Stour needed to make nine points on Worcestershire Division One league leaders Eastnor in the final weekend of the season but due to the wretched weather they were denied that opportunity and the aim to get back into the Birmingham League will have to wait for at least one more year.
Stour’s 20-point deduction following an incident in their recent game Netherton proved to be costly according to skipper Keith Jones.
He said: “Its been really disappointing to lose out on first division honours in the way it has worked out.
“On results we were well ahead of the field but can’t take anything away from Eastnor in the end they picked up the most points.
“The league’s decision to penalise the club has been costly.
“The 20 points has made us more determined to prove a point next season.”
Despite missing out on promotion club chairman Harilal Patel is confident the War Memorial outfit can continue to march forward both on and off the field.
He said: “We will continue to go ahead with our plans despite the big set back to improve and expand the club.
“We are waiting for the confirmation letter from Worcester County Board for the final approval of out application for the ECB Clubmark.
“This will open up new opportunities for the club which we will be exploring for the benefits of our young players, members and volunteers.”
Hagley.
The last weekend of the league season was completely washed out with the torrential downpours.
This leaves the firsts finishing third in Division Three and as long as Kington gain 10 or more points in their Birmingham League game next week, Hagley will be promoted to Division Two.
Captain Joe Lennon said: “It has been a good season with the team showing signs of improving from the last couple of years and hopefully if Kington get it right, then we will be playing a better standard of cricket in Division Two next year and with a few new players be able to compete well in that league.”
The seconds have gained automatic promotion, finishing second in Division Two of the second team league and will be playing Division One cricket next year.
Captain Neil Allport said: “I am delighted with gaining successive promotion after coming up last year and it will mean a better standard of cricket for the boys in the second team to help improve their games and push for first team places next year, we have thoroughly deserved it as Stourbridge and ourselves have stood out in the league this year.”
The club's season finishes on Saturday with both teams playing their Belbroughton counterparts in an end of season friendly.
Pedmore.
Despite a damp end to the season Pedmore skipper Steve Lawson has been delighted with his side’s progress.
He said: “Overall, it's been a really good season for us considering this was our first year in Division Two.
“Both first and second teams finishing in fifth place.
“The first team were just seven points off a promotion place in the end, which was a fantastic effort from all the lads.
“Obviously, it has been another frustrating end to the season with the weather but all in all I have been pleased with the level of commitment we have showed week in week out. We will now build again over the winter, and look to push for promotion next time round.”
