Borough residents can enjoy countryside scenery and learn more about their local wildlife and heritage in a series of countryside walks this month.

The Black Country Boating Festival takes place this weekend (Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September) from 10am to 4pm.

This is an annual extravaganza of everything relating to canals and the meeting place is Bumble Hole visitor centre, Windmill End, Netherton, Dudley.

On Wednesday September 17 from 10am to 12.30pm, there’s an autumn bird walk around Wren’s Nest.

It meets at the Mons Hill college car park, Wren’s Hill Road, Dudley.

Participants are invited to take their binoculars to see the last of the summer residents and hopefully the first of the autumn migrants.

No previous bird watching experience is necessary and appropriate clothing and footwear is required as paths can be slippery.

On Saturday September 20 from 10am to noon, there’s a chance to explore The Leasowes and Coombeswood, and take in views of the Clent Hills and surrounding area.

The walk meets at the warden’s base at The Leasowes, off Mucklow Hill, Halesowen.

There’s a three mile walk on Thursday September 25 from 10am to 1pm which takes place in Fens Pools and Barrow Hill.

The walk passes through Fens Pools, the largest area of open water in Dudley, and leads up to the top of Barrow Hill, the Dudley volcano.

The walk meets at the Fens Pools wardens’ base on the Dell Stadium, junction of Bryce Road and Pensnett Road.
