SCHOOL children going for gold in an Olympic-themed reading challenge are celebrating after more than 1,000 crossed the finishing line.
Borough libraries threw down the gauntlet for children aged four to 11 to read six books during their summer holidays in this year’s Team Read Summer Reading Challenge.
Some of the successful readers were invited to celebrate their achievements at an awards event on Tuesday September 23 at the Saltwells Education Development Centre.
Children and parents were entertained by performance poet Craig Bradley and some of the lucky readers went home with prizes donated by attractions including Dudley Zoo, the Black Country Living Museum and West Midlands Safari Park.
Councillor Michael Evans, Dudley’s cabinet member for libraries and archives, praised those who took part, adding: “Every year the children of Dudley embrace this challenge with the support of their local libraries.”
The challenge is part of a national campaign which aims to boost the reading skills of school children during the long summer break.
