AT the recent Black Country Society meeting Mr Kerry Kegan of the Milestone Society gave an interesting and informative yet humuorous talk on the ‘Milestones’ on Worcestershire’s roads.
The milestones ranged from the Roman times up to the present day. It would appear the Romans were in the forefront of ‘re-cycling’ by the re- use of their milestones every time the Emperor changed!.
The length of the mile has changed over the years with each county having its own ideas in the early days, to a mile in Ireland instituted by Oliver Cromwell to appease his Lords over the size of their properties by increasing the size of an acre (2240 yds, a mile being equal to a ton, 2240 lbs) until, thankfully, we finally get the present length.
Royal Mail routes were marked by including the distance to London.
The next meeting of the Branch will be on October 15th 2008 at 7.30pm at the Church Centre, The Village Kingswinford when Mr James Morgan will talk on ’My Life with Jack’ The story of Jack Haden, The County Express Reporter of many years.
