CAMPAIGNERS objecting to plans to close Broadfield House Glass Museum are set to continue their fight all the way to the next local election.
It’s been 12 months since staff and supporters of the world famous Kingswinford museum first heard about Dudley Council’s controversial plan to close it - and since then the subject has made headlines throughout the year.
Determined protestor Jan Hendry has spearheaded a campaign to keep the issue in the public eye - and now she’s planning to make the Broadfield House saga an election issue; she’s hoping to stand as a candidate for the Lib Dems in Kingswinford South in the next local election.
Jan, a member of the Friends of Broadfield House group, told the News: “We’re going to continue with the fight.
“We believe this collection is important to this area and we feel so strongly about this issue - we’re going to take it to the local election.
“Never in the world did I think I’d actually be wanting to stand as a councillor 12 months ago, but this campaign has really taken over my life.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting people and listening to what they’ve got to say - and there’s other local issues I’d like to find out about and get involved in.”
And she wouldn’t be the first campaigner to turn councillor in Kingswinford.
The 42-year-old former teaching assisant, who lives in the village, hopes to follow in the footsteps of Lib Dem cllr Lynn Boleyn, who gained a seat on Dudley Council after successfully fighting off council plans to close Maidensbridge Primary School.
If she gets officially selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate, mum-of-one Jan will be drawing up battle plans to take on sitting Conservative councillor Patrick Harley in the race to the polls.
