Launceston 50, Stourbridge Saxons 17 There was a disappointing end to the season for Stourbridge as a depleted Saxons side conceded eight tries in Cornwall.

Injuries had left the Saxons short and prop Andi Lawrence slotted in at lock in place of skipper Ben Hughes while hooker Liam Wordley captained the side from the back row. The replacements bench also had an unfamiliar look with Adam Sturdy – out of action for 12 months – alongside veterans Tony Windo and Mitchell.

Yet it was the visitors who chalked up the first points of the game when, on nine minutes, the ball was swung from left to right where young winger Sam Baker ran in the overlap for the first of two tries.

Launceston hit back with scores from powerful centre Palepoi Nonu and full-back Kieron Lewitt before Saxons scrum-half Peter White intercepted a wayward pass near his own line before running the length of the field to score, making the line just before James Hawken had managed to scamper across from the opposite wing.

That edged the visitors to within four points but six unanswered tries either side of the break saw the Cornishmen race clear.

Winger Hawken ran in back-to-back tries before the break before a storming run from the outstanding Wordley almost led to a much-needed reply at the start of the second period, the Stourbridge talisman being halted just short of the line.

The Stourbridge centres had no answer to the powerful running of opposite numbers Nonu and Ryan Westren and it was the latter, playing his final game for the Cornish club, who terrorised the tiring visitors as the game wore on.

He powered to the line for a 44th-minute try in the corner and claimed a second ten minutes from time. In between there were further scores from back row Joshua Lord - after Cameron Brown’s clearing kick from behind his own line had been charged down - and winger Chris Chew.

A brawl ten minutes from the end resulted in Stourbridge’s Billy Moss being shown a yellow card together with Launceston’s former Moseley prop Neil Bayliss and the Saxons then lost their other prop Tim Pickard to the bin four minutes later after he had taken out the kicker.

Down to 13, the visitors continued to throw the ball around and scored an excellent try with the final move of the game, Baker capping a fine display by dotting down in the corner with Hearn slotting over the conversion.
