MEMBERS of Stourbridge Cricket Club are set to raise the roof after scooping more than £30,000 for a clubhouse upgrade.

The club, which is based at the War Memorial Ground in High Street, Amblecote, is collecting £26,000 from the Cory Environmental Trust in Britain (CETB) which will be spent on repairs to the building’s roof which dates back to 1924.

Workers will remove the roof from the clubhouse and salvage as much of the original material as possible for use in restoration work.

Club spokesman, Mark Ashbourne, said: “The work to the roof is the culmination of four years of work by the club aimed at improving the clubhouse and facilities they offer to their members and the wider community.

“This has included complete rewiring of the pavilion, the fitting of new windows, creating a disabled toilet, renovating toilets and the building of an all weather practice facility that is used by local schools, youth groups, voluntary and community groups and other cricket clubs.”

The club is also going green with a £7,200 grant from the BRE Community Sustainable Energy Programme to part-fund the cost installing solar energy technology to supply nearly all their hot water and 40 per cent of their electricity.

The club hopes the savings on their utility bills will provide extra cash for more improvements to the club.
