FUNDRAISERS at a landmark Lye chapel are pulling out all the stops to raise the final few thousands pounds needed to get vital restoration work underway.

Windows and pointing at the front of Bethel Chapel in Hill Street are in urgent need of restoring at a cost of £23,000.

To date around £16,000 has been raised through donations, grants and sales - and project co-ordinator Val Woodhouse is now busy trying to pull in the remaining £7,000 to get the work underway by the end of the summer.

Pastor Jill Berry said: “Even though times are financially tough, people have been incredibly kind, generous and supportive of what we are trying to achieve. Bethel is a community focal point and we must ensure its place in local history.”

The church, which dates back to April 2 1900, has been designated a building of local historic importance by Dudley Council.

But restoration work must be carried out to the pointing and cast iron window frames soon to preserve its architectural character.

As well as its Sunday services, the church also plays host to Little Lambs Pre-School Centre, Little Acorns Parent and Toddler Group, Icebreakers Youth Group, Pathfinders Children’s Group, Waterhole Youth Club, One-Way After School Club and Cornerstone Senior Citizens Luncheon Club.
