COUNCIL bosses are urging people to nominate inspirational individuals from across the borough to be torchbearers when the Olympic flame passes through the West Midlands.

Dudley Council chiefs are encouraging residents to play their part when the Olympic flame makes its journey around the UK in a year’s time.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) will be determining the exact route of the flame on the basis that it will pass by within an hour’s drive of 95 per cent of the UK.

Councillor David Stanley, Dudley’s cabinet member for environment and culture, said: "We are appealing for people to nominate truly inspirational individuals from the Dudley borough as torchbearers.

"LOCOG is currently asking for nominations of up to 8,000 people to be the Olympic torchbearers and we hope to see plenty of Dudley nominations made as part of this process.”

People are asked to nominate those who have been an inspiration to others - such as those who have made a real difference in their school or community, those who have been an inspirational friend or shown great respect to others and people who have demonstrated the importance of fair play.

Applications should be kept to a maximum of 150 words.

People have until Tuesday June 28 to register their nominations at the London 2012 website https://torchbearernominations.london2012.com
