THIRTY workers at doomed DIY firm Focus will be heading for the dole queue when the Kingswinford store closes its doors for good this weekend.

The Dudley Road store’s last trading day will be on Sunday June 19, administrators confirmed this week.

The store is one of 122 across the country shutting up shop after joint administrators Simon Allport, Tom Jack and Alan Hudson from Ernst & Young were appointed to the struggling DIY retailer which has been hit hard by tough economic times.

Dudley South MP Chris Kelly said the closure and loss of 30 jobs would be a “blow for loyal, hard-working employees in Kingswinford”.

He added: "My thoughts are with those employees and their families at this difficult time.

"It is not yet clear whether the business will be successfully sold as a going concern, and I continue to make enquiries on behalf of my constituents employed by Focus, including on how the company intend to help and support those whose jobs are at risk."

A total of 55 stores have been sold to competitors Kingfisher and Wickes but administrators have been unable to secure a buyer for the business as a whole.

They say they are continuing to seek proposals for all unsold stores and remain hopeful of preserving further jobs.

Joint administrator Simon Allport said: “UK retailers are facing one of the most challenging retail environments in recent times and the DIY sector has become highly competitive, with only the strongest players being able to thrive and survive.

“We would like to thank all Focus DIY employees for their continued support in what has been a difficult and uncertain time.”
