EIGHTY cyclists from Stourbug (Stourbridge Bicycle User Group) will be taking to the roads tomorrow (Saturday June 18) to kick off Bike Week 2011.
Groups of cyclists will head out into South Staffordshire across three different routes – 40 miles, 50 miles and 100k (63 miles) before arriving back at Mary Stevens Park together at about 3.15pm.
The event is the culmination of many months training following Stourbug’s plea at the beginning of the year for people to ‘get on their bikes’ and sign up for a 40-mile challenge.
Since then the new ‘trainees’ have spent the past few months building up their stamina by going on progressively longer training rides around the area in a bid to be at full fitness for the challenge.
They have done so well Stourbug have put on additional 50-mile and 63-mile routes to cater for the trainees’ new found abilities.
Stourbug chairman, Russell Eden, said: “We are hoping that family and friends will gather at Mary Stevens Park to welcome the riders back after their challenge. For most of the trainees who started in February this will be the furthest they have ever cycled and it is a fantastic achievement.
“We’d also love to see people cheering the riders on if they see them en route.”
Stourbridge MP Margot James will set off the teams from Mary Stevens Park in stages between 9am and 10 am.
