THE Bishop of Dudley unveiled a new baby memorial at Wordsley’s Holy Trinity Church.
A new remembrance garden has been created in the High Street church’s grounds to mark the final resting place of hundreds of stillborn babies delivered at Wordsley Hospital and buried in the churchyard pre-1970.
Created thanks to a fundraising drive by parishioners who raised £3,000, it was blessed and officially unveiled last night (Sunday June 26) by the Rt Rev David Walker, Bishop of Dudley.
The memorial, an area for bereaved parents to sit and think, comprises a flowering tulip tree which has been planted inside a wrought iron circular bench close to the church entrance.
It also features a stone donated by Dudley stonemasons Jones, inscribed with words by 17th century poet George Herbert.
Rev Colin Jones, from Holy Trinity Church, said money for the memorial flooded in after the congregation launched an appeal last November.
He added: “Over the years we have received many queries from parents wishing to know the resting place of their loved ones.
“The garden is in a lovely area of the grounds with beautiful views and we hope we have made a peaceful place for families to sit and reflect.”
