PIRATE enthusiasts can get their hands on a chunk of the ‘rich stuff’ when a genuine piece of treasure goes under the hammer at a Stourbridge auction this weekend.
A real silver piece of eight is among a collection of coins being auctioned off at Fieldings Auctioneers’ Mantiques and Collectables Sale on Saturday July 2, starting at 10am.
The coin, which has been confirmed as genuine pirate treasure, has been in the hands of a private collector since 1964 when it was recovered from a pirate ship which sank at Lucayan Beach off the coast of the Bahamas in 1628.
Auctioneer Mark Hannam said: “I’ve only ever seen one other piece of pirate treasure in 28 years in the business.”
He said the silver coin has been valued at £100 to £150 but it could sell for double the estimate to anyone enamoured by the “sheer romance of owning a piece of pirate treasure.”
A host of other historic coins, plus a collection of mechanical music boxes and a plethora of antique boys’ toys, will also feature in the sale at the Mill Race Lane auctionhouse.
