NATHAN Round believes Saturday’s seven wicket win over Wombourne was Old Hill’s best result of the season so far.

The comfortable win elevated Old Hill into the Birmingham League Division One top two and put a dent in a fellow promotion hopeful.

Round said: “We played really, really well and the new lads who have come in are now hitting top form.

“Wombourne is a tough place to go and they were in the mix for promotion last year, so to get the win was really pleasing.”

The hosts batted first but found their scoring rate kept in check by some excellent bowling from the visitors.

Wombourne finished on 174-8 from 49 overs with Nigel Davenport (4-34) and Ed Denham (2-27) being pick of the visiting bowlers.

In reply, Old Hill lost opener Mike Hingley with the score on 22 but fellow opener Dan Cox was in tremendous form as he struck a delightful 115, which included a stand of 97 with Mark Fisher (29).

Cox departed with the scores level before Alex Hills cracked the winning runs.

Round revealed the success had come from sticking to a gameplan.

He said: “We didn’t try to bowl them out, just restrict them.

“We knew they have a few young lads who like to hit the ball to the fence so if we took that away from them they would get frustrated.

“Dan Cox then came in and hit a magnificent innings.”
