LAWBREAKING limo drivers are being targeted in a council crackdown aimed at protecting teenage revellers heading for school proms.
Dudley licensing officers are teaming up with cops and the Vehicle Operating Service Agency (VOSA) for a sweeping programme of checks on cars to ensure they are properly licensed, insured and roadworthy.
The crackdown comes as youngsters and their parents book transport for end-of-term events during the summer prom season.
Councillor Tim Wright, Dudley cabinet member for human resources, law and governance, said: “Every year students look to celebrate their prom night by arriving in limousines. We are committed to making sure they do so safely and legally and I hope they have enormous fun and arrive in style in celebrating the end of some very hard work.
“I would urge parents to take the time to make sure insurance and licenses are all properly in order before agreeing a booking.
“I am sure the vast majority of companies who operate these are law abiding and follow the correct procedures, but those who do not face prosecution through the courts.”
Checks carried out recently found one vehicle to be unroadworthy, which was impounded by police. More stop checks are planned over the coming weeks.
