THE really, really sad thing about the blot on the landscape that is the new Aldi building in Wollaston, is that the ridiculous "space age" roof seems to serve no useful function within the building itself.
Look up when inside and there would seem no way that this space can serve any use whatsoever! Its height merely guarantees that the views from many more windows than necessary are blighted, had it been lower or pitched it could have been far less of a eyesore than it has turned out to be.
The front elevation whilst still very unattractive does at least have some visual variety with a slightly offset side extension.
But the back elevation is SO UGLY how anyone can claim that it fits comfortably into a conservation area must be barking mad!
Given the lie of the land at the rear a same height extension will only serve to emphasise this hideous design.
Particularly when the hedge is removed and the metal fence displayed in its full glory! I feel so sorry for those forced to look at it from their homes.
We all understand commerce is king but if Aldi thinks it does not have sufficient space I suggest they look inside the building to improve customer flow.
Even with just a few customers around, the size of the trolleys (which are very wide) make it difficult to pass in the aisles (which is more of a width problem than a depth one.) In my opinion Aldi should save its extension budget and employ a decent shop fitter to get the flow right, improve the display units both size and location and invest in narrower trolleys.
