I WAS saddened myself to read that someone could find the sign outside St James Primary school to be such an offensive thing.
I am also not aware that science has completely and without shadow of doubt concluded creation was a myth, I’m afraid many questions still remain.
St James is a Church of England School and one with an excellent reputation.
I was amazed that your writer talks of the Teachers ‘peddling such an untruth’ as if they are on a mission to convert or to somehow brainwash their pupils by the time they leave for secondary school.
I can assure your writer that this is not the case. If you read the full school handbook it states very clearly that no pressure is exerted on pupils in this regard.
The reason that St James is a successful school is because its teachers are of a high calibre who promote self-respect, respect for others, encourage pupils to love one another, and treat others as they would be treated.
These qualities lie at the heart of the Gospel, and the school is open in declaring this. I am pleased that they are prepared to do so in an age where Christian views are increasingly attacked and mocked.
We send our children to St James’s because we believe it will give them a positive grounding and a good education.
As for what they choose to believe as adults later in life, that will be their decision. I wonder if your writer would feel as comfortable directing his or her views at schools of other faiths who enjoy the same freedom of expression as St James’s does?
Finally your anonymous writer asks ‘how the teachers sleep at night’. I should think very soundly!
Firstly as their job is one of the most tiring and demanding there is, and secondly and most importantly, because like myself many of them will feel their faith enables them to.
The Bible describes it as a ‘peace that passes all understanding’, and science itself cannot fathom that.
