A BIG thank you to all who contributed to the Fairtrade bunting which was displayed during Fairtrade Fortnight.
In Stourbridge we gathered together 1097 pennants which measured a phenomenal 203 metres.
This was sent to London and is now part of the world record breaking bunting containing 130,000 individually decorated flags all made from Fairtrade cotton collected from the whole of the UK.
14,281 pennants totalling 3,427m were needed to beat the world record.
Stourbridge supported Fairtrade and has contributed to a creative petition in the form of the world’s longest ever string of handmade bunting, which was hung from lamp posts around Battersea Park on May 16 to show the UK’s support for West African cotton farmers.
Cotton is the most used natural fibre in the world and should be the white gold that propels ten million West African farmers out of poverty.
But the West African cotton industry is being obstructed by a wall of subsidies dished out by the United States and European Union to their own farmers.
The Fairtrade Foundation is running the Great Cotton Stitch Up Campaign calling on the EU to scrap its cotton subsidies.
