Dudley Town’s tasty start to the season continued at the Dell Stadium on Saturday with victory in the FA Vase earning them a night out at the local curry house.

The Robins flew into the next round of the competition after seeing off Southam United 2-0 thanks to goals from Dan Ashton and Mensa Kinch.

Town picked up £800 for winning their first round qualifying tie and the players will now enjoy a curry night to to celebrate their success according to joint manager Ian Rowe.

He said: “The lads did really well.

“It was a great result for us against a side previously unbeaten this year, who had also claimed cup wins over both Gornal and Lye.

“We now look forward to a home tie against Rothley Imps in the next round.

“Success in this competition is also good for the club as it brings some much-needed cash and the chairman has promised to take us out for a curry for beating Southam.”

The Robins will be hoping to take this form with them into Saturday’s tough trip to second-placed Bewdley Town.

Rowe is hoping star striker Michael Husbands will be able to shake off a knee injury in time for the clash.

The former Walsall and Port Vale frontman left Oxford United at the start of the season and in a bid to get some matches under his belt has signed for the Robins.

The live-wire forward scored twice on his debut in a 3-1 win over AFC Wulfrunians and Rowe is hoping for more of the same.

He added: “Having Michael come to us and ask to play is like Ronaldo knocking on Walsall’s door and asking ifhe can a few games for them.

“It’s been a real coup for us to have a player of his ability come and play for free.

“He’s had a number of non-league club’s sniffing around but because he’s keen to get back into the professional game.

“He’s just waiting to see what happens and while he’s doing that we are reaping the benefits.

“He’s a fantastic bloke and he’s just knuckled down and got on with it and you just can’t fault his attitude.”

Also hoping to be available for Saturday’s away trip will be joint-manager Rob Perks and goalkeeper Jez Thomas, who are both recovering from injury.

Dudley Sports bowed out of the FA Vase on Saturday in controversial fashion.

Sports went down 1-0 at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare after the visitors were awarded a dubious 86th minute penalty.

Joint-manager Tony Gore was outraged by the decsion.

He said: “We are all really disappointted because we were hard done by with the referee’s decison to give a penalty.

“It was as much a penalty as Reading’s was a goal against Watford on Saturday.”

Despite the obvious disappointment of exiting the Vase, Gore was proud of his team.

He added: “I thought the team put in a real committed performance against a good side who only a week earlier had taken Stourbridge to a replay in the FA Cup.”

This Saturday, Sports will return to West Midlands Premier Division action when they pay a visit to Goodrich.

Tividale also tumbled out of the Vase on Saturday after going down 4-2 at Stone Dynamoes.

This Saturday, they will be looking to continue their good start in the league when they host Wednesfield.

Gornal Athletic put their FA Cup heartache behind them as they progressed into the second round qualifying of the FA Vase.

The Peacocks defeated Kimberley 2-0 to reach the next round of the competition.

They then travelled to Newark Town on Tuesday evening where they played out an exciting 3-3 draw.

The replay will take place next Tuesday (September 30) at the Garden Walk Stadium.

This Saturday they will welcome Ellemere Rangers (3pm kick-off).
