Sainsburys were celebrating after sealing victory in the Merry Hill Five football tournament at Powerleague Halesowen last month.

22 teams from the shops at the popular centre and the surrounding area attended the Champions League style event to decide which shop has the best football team.

The teams were split into four groups in which each team played each other once with the top two progressing through to the quarter final stages.

Group one was a two horse race between TK Maxx and Marks and Spencers (M&S) A team.

TK Maxx pipped M&S to the top spot by one point.

Office and Boots Opticians dominated group two both finish with 12 points from their five games and a identical goal difference.

Three teams tied at the top of group three with Schuh, Nothing Special and Sainsbury’s all finishing with 12 points, Schuh were the unlucky team not to progress because of an inferior goal difference.

Next cruised through group four winning all their games in the process with Dream Team finishing in second place.

So it was on to the quarter final stage for the teams that managed to battle their way through the groups, TK Maxx and Sainsbury’s won their matches to set up a semi-final clash against each other with Nothing Special and Next progressing from the other quarter finals.

Both semi-finals were extremely hard fought games at the end of which Sainsbury’s and Next were the teams that had earnt their places in the final.

The final was a high scoring affair with Sainsbury’s finally pulling away to win 8-4 and claim the Powerleague Merry Hill Fives Trophy.

Both finalists can be extremely proud of themselves for battling their way through both the group stages and knockout stages on a night when the standard of football was very impressive.
