This production brought the New Vic's circular stage to life with enriching set and costume design lead by Laura Willstead and Lis Evans, these elements created a magical atmosphere and added key visual interest to the performance.
The Nutcracker: a Christmas tale took place from the 17th of December to the 27th of January, it filled the theatre with festive entertainment for 4 and a half weeks, bringing joy to hundreds of faces, young and old. The narrative (lead by Franky Attard as Marie, and Edward Chang as the Nutcracker) is strongly based on the traditional and well-loved Russian story of The Nutcracker, the audience follow the perspective of Marie as she ventures with the enchanted nutcracker prince through a magical realm. This is an unusual place where toys come to life and kingdoms are made of sweets, they must climb to the top of the Christmas tree where they defeat the mouse queen. This adventurous tale engages the audience through beautiful live music and a sense of comedy throughout.
The well-crafted performance was an overall triumph and helped brighten the Christmases of many people, spreading smiles around the auditorium. The New Vic never fails to put on a unique and entertaining show and The Nutcracker: A Christmas tale was no exception.
